5 Mountains Deadlier than Everest

Hundreds of climbers have lost their lives trying to conquer Everest, including four last weekend. But the tallest mountain in the world is not actually the most lethal. Approximately 3,000 climbers have successfully reached Everest’s peak, including a 13-year-old, a blind person, and a 73-year-old woman who this month broke her own record for oldest female climber. Here are five mountains considered to be more challenging and deadly than Everest. Climbers attempted to scale Kangchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain, for fifty years before finally reaching its peak in 1955. The mountain, plagued by avalanches and inclement weather, lacks a direct route, which can make for a confusing and treacherous climb. And while most mountains have boasted improved fatality rates in recent years thanks to better gear and technology, Kangchenjunga is the exception. Death rates since the 1990s have reached as high as 22 percent. Only 187 climbers have summited Kangchenjunga.

K2 kills one climber for every four who summit. Conquering the “holy grail of mountaineering” means dealing with steeper, icier slopes and less predictable weather than on Everest. Some 280 people have summited K2 since 1954, when it was first conquered. Dozens of deaths have been recorded since 1939, most of which occurred during the descent. While the overall death toll is reportedly less than Everest’s, the proportion of those killed to the number of people who have attempted climbing K2 is significantly higher. The death rate recorded since the 1990s sits just below Kangchenjunga’s at 19.7 percent.

Annapurna, Central Nepal - 26,545 feet

Since the first ascent in 1950, Annapurna has only been climbed by about 130 people, and approximately 53 have died trying. It may be only the 10th highest mountain peak in the world, but with a death rate of 41 percent, it is statistically the most dangerous.

Nanga Parbat, Kashmir - 26,657 feet

Known affectionately as the Man Eater, Nanga Parbat is the ninth-largest mountain in the world. But its mountain face, at 15,000 feet, is the highest on the planet. This wall of ice on its southern side has mesmerized climbers since its first successful ascent in 1953. More than 263 people have summited the mountain since, but over the years 62 have died trying. Since the bulk of those deaths occurred before 1953, however, the mountain’s recent death rate is much improved at 5.5 percent, just above Everest’s 4.4 percent.

The Eiger, Switzerland - 13,000 feet

The Eiger, German for ogre, is nowhere near the tallest mountain, but it still has one of the most daunting reputations in the climbing world thanks to its infamous north face. Nicknamed Death Wall, the 6,000-foot face is so dangerous that it’s actually safest to climb during the coldest months of the year because fewer rocks will fall with the melting ice. The mountain was first summited in 1938 and at least 64 climbers have died attempting to do the same.

Solar-powered airplane embarks on first transcontinental flight

An experimental solar-powered airplane embarked on its first transcontinental flight on Thursday, The Associated Press reported. The Solar Impulse plane left Switzerland and, after a pilot change in Spain, should reach North Africa next week. The aircraft features a 207-foot wingspan and more than 12,000 solar panels.

The project began in 2003 and is estimated to cost about $100 million over 10 years. The Swiss traveled to Belgium and France last year to complete the Solar Impulse’s first international flight.

The mission to Africa is described as the final dress rehearsal before a round-the-world flight that will include stops in the United States using a newer and more improved model scheduled to be unveiled in 2014.

GENEVA - An experimental solar-powered airplane took off from Switzerland on its first transcontinental flight Thursday, aiming to reach North Africa next week.

Pilot Andre Borschberg planned to take the jumbo jet-size Solar Impulse plane on its first leg to Madrid, Spain, by Friday. His colleague Bertrand Piccard will take the helm of the aircraft for the second stretch of its 2,500-kilometer (1,554-mile) journey to the Moroccan capital Rabat.

Fog on the runaway at its home base in Payerne, Switzerland, delayed the take off by two hours, demonstrating how susceptible the prototype single-seater aircraft is to adverse weather. "We can't fly into clouds because it was not designed for that," Borschberg said as he piloted the lumbering plane with its 63-meter (207-foot) wingspan toward the eastern French city of Lyon at a cruising speed of just 70 kilometers an hour (43.5 mph).

Before landing in Madrid in the early hours of Friday, Borschberg will face other challenges, including having to overfly the Pyrenees mountains that separate France and Spain.

Just in case things go disastrously wrong, Borschberg has a parachute inside his tiny cabin that he hopes never to use. "When you take an umbrella it never rains," he joked in a satellite call with The Associated Press.

Piccard – the son of undersea explorer Jacques Piccard and grandson of balloonist Auguste Piccard – will have to cross the windy Straits of Gibraltar from Europe to Africa.

The team has been invited to Morocco by the country's King Mohammed VI to showcase the cutting edge of solar technology.

Morocco is about to start construction on a massive solar energy plant at Ouarzazate. The plant will form part of a country-wide solar energy grid with a capacity of 2000 megawatts by 2020.

The mission is described as the final dress rehearsal for a round-the-world flight with a new and improved aircraft in 2014. That trip will include stops in the United States, said Borschberg.

In 2010, the Swiss flew non-stop for 26-hour to demonstrate that the 12,000 solar cells attached to the aircraft can soak up enough sunlight to keep the plane airborne through the night. A year later, he took Solar Impulse on its first international flight to Belgium and France.

The project began in 2003 and is estimated to cost about $100 million over 10 years.
