CLOSURES - Tory peer . . .

A former brewery boss and Tory peer has blamed the closure of “many” British pubs on the rise of non-drinking Muslims communities. Lord Hodgson also said cut-price alcohol in supermarkets was a problem for the industry.

Lord Hodgson of Astley Abbots told the House of Lords he feared the closure of pubs in “areas of Nottingham, Leicester, Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham” is due to “the increase of the Muslim population who don’t drink.”

The peer further claimed the industry was declining at an unprecedented rate.

“Twenty-five years ago, the company of which I was a director would have operated probably a dozen pubs in Kidderminster, the home of the carpet trade. The carpet trade has gone and there are three pubs left,” he said.

The rate of pub closures in the UK was found to have accelerated to 31 per week, the real ale group CAMRA said earlier this year, with 3 percent of pubs closing in the six months leading up to August.

A government study, however, does not draw links between areas with a high density of non-drinking Muslims and the rapid closure of pubs.

In the Pub Companies, Pub Closures and Pub Tenants Report, published on November 28, said “the sight of local pubs up for sale, or simply being turned into housing or supermarket convenience stores is a familiar one up and down the country.”

Lord Hodgson also blamed low-cost alcohol available in supermarkets, as well as “inexorable regulation,” for the rash of pub closures.

“The reasons for closure may be portrayed as rapacious owners increasing rent wishing to profit by turning pubs into houses or corner stores, but the tide is running against the ordinary pub,” he added.

Muslim community leaders reacted with incredulity to the peer’s comments.

Nasima Begum, from the Muslim Council of Britain, said the allegations were both “surprising and disappointing.”

“What next? Muslims to be blamed for a fall in pork scratching sales?” she said. “We have come to a stage where it is easy for those in prominent positions to make their points at the expense of Muslims.”

Lord Hodgson’s comments come as figures released by the monitoring group Tell MAMA (Monitoring Anti-Muslim Attacks) found the number of faith-related hate crimes in London rose 23 percent in the year to October.

British Muslims are increasingly targeted as a way for disillusioned citizens to air their grievances. Indicative of the climate is the launch of the “Taliban Hunting Club” fashion range by neo-Nazi far-right group Britain First.

A recent study also showed that British Muslims are 70 percent less likely to find paid work than their Christian counterparts.

Fiyaz Mughal, the Director of Faith Matters, speaking about Lord Hodgson’s claims, told the Independent that his comments were “ridiculous.”

“It is quite ridiculous to blame Muslims for the closure of pubs when in fact the consumption and marketing of alcohol has also changed over time. What is also clear is that some pubs have been successful and others have not been able to generate customers and clients,” he added.

PUTIN Sees HOPE for New PEACE Deal IN E. UKRAINE . . .

Vladimir Putin has expressed the hope that a new ceasefire deal in eastern Ukraine will be reached soon. His comment comes after talks with Francois Hollande who made an unscheduled short visit to Moscow to discuss the conflict.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Putin said that while both sides in the Ukrainian conflict are not fulfilling all their obligations, the situation there gives hope for improvement in the near future.

Both Paris and Moscow agree on the need for an “immediate end to the bloodshed," Putin said. He called on Kiev to promptly withdraw its artillery and multiple rocket launchers from the border with the Donbass region.

“The situation [in Ukraine] is tragic, we can see that people are still dying there, but I very much hope that in the near future a final decision on the ceasefire will be made,” he said.

Russia expects Kiev to exclude any possibility of a blockade of the eastern Donetsk and Lugansk republics, he added: "Otherwise it is difficult to imagine the territorial integrity of Ukraine. Russia, as you know, supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine."

“Russia initiated the meeting [between Kiev and representatives of the eastern republics] in Minsk, with our direct participation these protocols were signed, so we support their full implementation,” Putin elaborated.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko announced a new round of talks between Kiev and representatives of the eastern republics will take place on Tuesday. The negotiations will focus on agreeing a schedule for the implementation of the measures to be taken under the Minsk protocol. It is not certain whether Hollande and Putin were referring to Tuesday’s talks when speaking in Moscow. The proposed date of talks coincided with the so-called “Day of Silence”, when both sides of the conflict vowed to observe a ceasefire.

Hollande made an unexpected stop in Moscow’s Vnukovo-2 airport as he traveled from neighboring Kazakhstan to France on Saturday.

"I was flying over Moscow and made a decision to stop over here for discussing the most significant issues related to Ukraine's crisis and to all the sufferings stemming out of it for the Ukrainians, for the European Union and for Russia as well," Hollande said.

Putin welcomed his counterpart and thanked him for the visit, saying that it “certainly will benefit the resolution of many problems.”

The French leader said he was eager to continue the discussion started at the G20 in Australia and at the three-way meeting between himself, Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel during D-Day celebrations in France.

“On June 6 we talked about the need to find solutions, to work together. We’ve talked with Angela Merkel. We believe that Russia and France will be able to find the necessary solution,” he said. "I believe at some moment it is necessary to overcome the obstacles, the walls, which may separate us, and I believe we can do this."

Tensions between Russia and France have been on the rise as Paris has come under to annul delivery of Mistrals, helicopter-carrying amphibious assault ships, to Moscow over the Ukrainian crisis.

As a result, in late November Hollande decided to suspend the delivery of the first such ship "until further notice".

Moscow has urged Paris to fulfill the agreement with top-ranking officials adding Russia will sue France should the ship not be delivered at all. France is facing a multibillion dollar fine, if it fails to deliver under the contract. The delay of the warships’ delivery has reportedly entailed additional costs for Paris.

On Saturday, Putin said that the two leaders did not speak about the delay as Moscow proceeds from the fact that the contract will be fulfilled. Otherwise Russia expects full compensation from France, he added.

SNOWDEN Movie picks Up top Docu AWARD . . .

"CitizenFour," a documentary about former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, who blew the whistle on top secret NSA materials, exposing US surveillance network worldwide, has won the International Documentary Association top award for best feature in LA.

The International Documentary Association (IDA), a 30-year-old nonprofit organization, is dedicated to serving the needs of a "thriving documentary culture", attempting to be at the forefront of major issues confronting documentary artists, activists and journalists.

The documentary features a series of face-to-face meetings between Berlin-based filmmaker Laura Poitras, who is on the US Homeland Security “watch list”, and the whistleblower Snowden, who got in touch with Poitras last January when she was working on a feature about surveillance in the post-9/11 era.

"Every border you cross, every purchase you make, every call you dial is in the hands of a system whose reach is unlimited but whose safeguards are not," Edward Snowden warns in the trailer.

In 2013, after several months of encrypted correspondence, Poitras came to Hong Kong to meet the daredevil leaker. Her camera captured "Citizenfour", aka Snowden, in a hotel room, over the "eight days that shook the world," during which his astounding revelations were first made public in June.

Poitras said she initially expected him to be an anonymous source she never got to meet. She was highly surprised when he said: “I’m coming forward and I want you to paint a target on my back because I don’t want a leak investigation that ruins the lives of others.”

"Saya fikir Snowden mahu mengambil tanggungjawab supaya orang lain tidak mengambil kejatuhan Apabila dia memberitahu saya bahawa, saya berkata kepa-danya, 'Saya mahu berjumpa dengan anda dan saya mahu membuat penggam-baran.' Tetapi beliau berkata: 'Tidak, saya pun tak mahu menjadi cerita.

"I think Snowden wanted to take responsibility so others didn’t take the fall. When he told me that, I told him, ‘I want to meet you and I want to film.’ His response was: ‘No, I don’t want to be the story.’ There was also a risk of us being in the same place at the same time. He didn’t want to take risks and then someone busts in the door and all this work to get the information out and it doesn’t get out."

Poitras assured him it wouldn’t happen.

"The reporting would continue if something happened to both of us," she told Vanity Fair.

"Citizenfour" is the final piece of Poitras' trilogy that began with an Oscar-nominee "My Country, My Country", about life and elections in Iraq during US occupation, and "The Oath", about Guantanamo Bay.

She said that before she was contacted by Snowden she was "stopped and detained every time she crossed the US border" for six years running, and finally decided to move to Berlin.

Poitras shared a Pulitzer Prize this year for her role in publicizing the Snowden documents. She was also awarded IDA's Courage Under Fire award last year for her "conspicuous bravery in the pursuit of truth."

PROMINENT Germans urge WEST to STOP Sabre Rattling toward RUSSIA . . .

A group of prominent Germans are urging their country and the West to open dialogue with Russia. They believe this is essential to ensure peace in Europe, rather than further isolate Moscow, which they say would be “dangerous for the world.”

The petition named ‘New war in Europe? Not in our name!’ was signed by 60 people from Germany’s politics, economy, culture and media sectors – among them former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and film director Wim Wenders.

The group, led by former Chancellor advisor Horst Teltschik, former Defense Secretary Walter Stutzle and the former Vice President of the Bunderstag, Antje Vollmer, said that just because Russia and the West are experiencing differences at the moment, it “does not mean that the progress that we have achieved over the last 25 years with Russia should be terminated,” Telschik said.

They want to see a new policy of détente implemented in Europe and urge the German government and the West to move away from a confrontational policy towards Moscow, in favor of one of diplomacy.

The group adds that the Europe and Russia both have a joint responsibility to ensure peace and security on the continent, however this can only be achieved through, “equal security for all and that all partners are respected.”

While the security concerns of certain Eastern European nations are being heeded by the West, the group says that Russia’s grievances should also be heard.

“The Russians’ security requirements are as legitimate and just as important as those of the Germans, the Poles, the Baltic States and Ukraine. We should not look to push Russia out of Europe,” a letter from the group said.

They also added that the media should try to be more objective in their reporting and should stop trying to demonize Russia at every given opportunity. “Every journalist who knows foreign policy well understands Russia’s fears that appeared when NATO members invited Georgia and Ukraine in 2008 to become members of their alliance.”

They believe that the West should not be so focused on Vladimir Putin as leaders come and go, but should make sure the West does not ruin relations with Russia for generations to come.

Historically, the group says, Russia has been a respected European power since the Congress of Vienna in 1814, while trying to confront Moscow has not been advisable. All attempts to forcefully change this status have failed "bloodily".

"The last time it was the megalomaniac Hitler’s Germany that set about a murderous campaign to conquer Russia in 1941.”
