Diplomasi: Netanyahu menghasut kemarahan IRAN dengan Jeans gaffe . . .

Image from Twitter/@NegarMortazavi (think IN pictures @1WORLDCommunity)

Denim diplomacy: Netanyahu incites Iranian ire with jeans gaffe

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu may have sought to induce Iranians in a ‘historic’ interview with the BBC’s Persian service, but a casual claim that people in the Islamic Republic are banned from wearing jeans was one fashion faux pas many could not bear.

Recent signs of a thaw in Iranian-US relations sent Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on a ‘media blitz’, telling the world not to be fooled by Iran.

When addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, he warned that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is a "wolf in sheep's clothing" dead set on advancing the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program despite overtures to the contrary.

But while the perennial threat of unilateral military action remained the stick in Netanyahu’s PR offensive, his decision to directly address the Iranian people for the first time ever via a Persian-speaking media outlet was viewed as the carrot in his repertoire.

Netanyahu’s chosen venue: BBC Persian, which some 12 million Iranians reportedly tune into each week.

Writing for Haaretz, Barak Ravid noted that the Israeli PM has railed against the Iranian nuclear threat for 18 years, but only now “found it appropriate to address the Iranian people or try to speak to Iran over the ayatollahs’ heads.”

Netanyahu’s hopes to appeal to young Persians by evoking the death of Neda Agha-Soltan during the 2009 Iranian election protests while discussing the need for an end to the country’s uranium enrichment program might have been a deft maneuver in normal circumstances.

One comment, however, displayed not just how out of touch Netanyahu is with the average Iranian, but an apparent obliviousness to how the country’s internet-savvy and fashion-conscious youth would respond.

"I think if the Iranian people had freedom, they would wear jeans, listen to Western music, and have free elections," Netanyahu said in the interview, which was dubbed into Farsi and released late on Saturday.

In one fell swoop, Netanyahu incited anger among the young, liberal demographic which was likely to have voted for President Rouhani en masse in the last election and would have otherwise been amenable to the Israeli PM’s message.

“Katanya menulis sebarang tweet.

While many young Persians may have been open to Netanyahu’s overtures, one slip of the tongue ensured that in an interview which had been heavily marketed, style would prevail over substance.

Dozens of Iranians published pictures of themselves on Sunday donning denim and annotated with sarcastic barbs directed Netanyahu’s way as part of the so-called ‘jeans protest.’

Twitter, which is blocked by the Iranian government but is routinely accessed via virtual private networks, became the primary outlet for Iranian youths to bash the Israeli PM for his less-than-astute comments.

“2day I’m wearing jeans, I can send my photo 4 Netanyahu if his spies in Iran didn’t see people who wear jeans and listen to Western songs by their iPhone!” Sadegh Ghorbani, a young journalist from Tehran, posted on Twitter.

Mohamad Nezamabadi, a student at Tehran University, was equally derisory. “Not only we wear jeans, but also listen to the foreign language musics [sic]! I bet he thinks that we ride horses instead of cars!” he tweeted.

But perhaps the coup de grâce was a picture of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei next to an Iranian boy in jeans.

While women in Iran are required to cover their hair and wear loose clothing in public, jeans are not forbidden. Western music for its part is illegal, though peer-to-peer file sharing, there, as everywhere, has the average Iranian teen plugged in directly to worldwide trends.

Others used the opportunity to open a deeper political dialogue on the bone of contention between the two states.

“When @netanyahu doesn't know about what Iranians wear, how does he dare to talk about Iran's Nuclear Program? #IranJeans,” Ali Shahri wrote on Twitter.

“#Netanyahu has no idea what ppl in #IRAN do in public; how he can be so sure he has accurate info of what's going on in secret N bunkers?”  Mehrzad Kohanrouz tweeted in a similar vein.

As noted by Ravid, “if Netanyahu is interested in contemporary fashion in Teheran, he can enter an album titled "Tehran Street Style" on the image-sharing website Imgur. Apart from the head covering, any one of the young people there could easily blend in on the streets of Tel Aviv.”

Netanyahu also noted that the people of Iran and Israel had a "deep friendship into modern times" whose destruction he blamed on the theocratic government in Tehran. He criticized the censorship of social media and satellite channels inside Iran as well as the government's treatment of women and gay people.

"This is not what the Persian people deserve," Netanyahu said.

"I would welcome a genuine rapprochement, a genuine effort to stop the nuclear program – not a fake one. Not 'harfe pooch'," Netanyahu said, which can be roughly translated as "empty words" or “nonsense”.

While many young Persians may have been open to Netanyahu’s overtures, one slip of the tongue ensured that in an interview which had been heavily marketed, style would prevail over substance.

At least 53 killed, over 200 wounded as Egypt protests
turn violent – report

Egyptian celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Arab-Israeli War were marred by a fresh wave of violence, with at least 53 people killed and over 200 wounded in clashes between police and supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi.

RT's Arabic team also got caught in the turmoil in Cairo, with producer Ahmad al-Ashqar getting injured in the right leg in Giza's Dokki district.

At least 53 people were killed and 268 others injured across Egypt, AFP cited senior health ministry official Ahmed al-Ansari as saying. At least 45 individuals were killed in Cairo and another five south of the capital, according to the official.

Deputy Interior Minister General Sayed Shafiq told local media that the security situation is now “under control” in Cairo.

At least 423 people were arrested in Cairo and Giza during clashes on Sunday, the country’s Interior Ministry said. According to the Ministry's Facebook page, 180 people were detained in Giza, and another 243 people were apprehended in downtown Cairo.

In Cairo, Egyptian police fired tear gas to disperse pro-Morsi demonstrators as they marched towards Tahrir Square, where pro-army supporters gathered to celebrate the 1973 war anniversary. The tear gas and birdshots reportedly sent protesters running towards western Giza's Dokki neighborhood. Police chased demonstrators and beat them up before detaining them, a witness told AFP.

There were reports of heavy gunfire, but they could not be confirmed. Ahram Online quoted politician and former presidential candidate Bothaina Kamel telling Aswat Masriya that she was physically assaulted and that pro-Morsi demonstrators smashed her car windows as she drove through Dokki on Sunday.

The military wanted to protect the celebrations of the anniversary, which are now in full swing at Tahrir Square, according to RT’s Cairo-based correspondent Bel Trew. Egypt's interim President Adly Mansour called on people to come to the streets to celebrate what he called “a national day of pride.” Trew stated that Mansour did not want to see Muslim Brotherhood supporters causing trouble during the festivities. She said there were many people in the streets “with quite severe injuries in addition to being beaten heavily by people who were mingling with the security forces in support of the military.”

Clashes also erupted in the Garden City district in the center of the capital, where police fired tear gas and chased protesters along the Nile Corniche, forcing some demonstrators to jump into the water. Police boats were sent to retrieve protesters.

Unrest was reported in other parts of Cairo and in several other cities, including Alexandria, Aswan, and Suez. Earlier on Sunday, a pro-Morsi supporter was killed and at least two people were injured after clashes with police erupted during a protest march in the town of Delga, located 300 kilometers south of the capital.

Amid fears of new violence in the divided nation, security forces and armored vehicles were heavily deployed in Egyptian cities as events were held to commemorate the October 1973 war, known as the Yom Kippur War in Israel. The Interior Ministry warned earlier that it would “firmly confront” any violence during the celebrations.

Egypt has remained dangerously divided after the military overthrow of democratically elected Morsi in July, following his turbulent year in office. The coup was followed by a harsh crackdown on Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood movement, along with arrests of its leaders and other officials.

The former Egyptian leader is facing trial for inciting the murders of protesters outside the Presidential Palace in Cairo in December 2012, when at least 12 people were killed in clashes. Egypt’s new rulers also accuse Morsi of conspiring with Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas and plotting to attack police stations during the revolution two years ago which overthrew his predecessor, Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt is in a very volatile state, but the government’s reconciliation with the Muslim Brotherhood could become a solution to the crisis and help stop the violence, award-winning Middle East journalist Hugh Miles told RT.

“It is possible that Egypt could turn around in a short space of time. Probably not [with] this current government, because it really is just the army ruling the country at the moment. But in a few months, when elections have taken place, there will be a new government and one would expect that they will be motivated to reconcile,” Miles told RT. The journalist went on to say that “if they are democratically elected, they will be under local pressure inside Egypt, and also [under] international pressure to reconcile with the Brotherhood.”
