Obama on Syria: “International Community's Credibility is on the line”

US President Obama is in the Swedish capital Stockholm. He is visiting the country for 24 hours before travelling on to St Petersburg in Russia for the G20 conference.

His discussions are focusing on areas where there is agreement with Europe - climate change, trade and technology. At a press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, Obama answered questions about the Syrian crisis.

He said: "First of all I didn't set a red line. The world set a red line - the world set a red line when governments representing 98 percent of the world's population said the use of chemical weapons are abhorred and passed a treaty forbidding their use even when countries are engaged in war. My credibility is not on the line. The international community's credibility is on the line."

President Obama is seeking to use his visit to the Swedish capital to show a softer side of American diplomacy as the world focuses on a military intervention in Syria. The G20 summit begins in Russia on Thursday.
